IMHO, an escape message is an escape message because of the way it was sent i.e., sndpgmmsg msgtype(*escape)).

Sorry, I meant an API that will return the escape messages that CAN be
thrown by a command ... not to retrieve escape messages that are
thrown by a command execution.

As I think of it, I'm pretty sure there isn't a way to retrieve the
information I want. Command definitions don't include escape messages
that can be thrown by the command. The information is included in the
help text only.
