Yeah, IFNULL takes exactly 2 parameters, the 2nd being the value if the 1st is NULL. COALESCE takes any number of parameters, returns the 1st (I think) value that is not NULL, otherwise, the last if all the rest are NULL.

Everything I've done has needed only 2 parameters, still, I've used COALESCE, I guess I learned that first. But COALESCE also lines up with the 2003 SQL standards.

The joy of complex SQL statements. :-)

Platform-agnostic, I sometimes found it challenging to let make the
database to what I want in one go. Then it appeared much easier to me using
temporary tables and do several processing steps. IBM i is even more easy
because you could call external programs as stored procedures. Yet, it is
tempting to unload a task to the database engine at once.

Maybe this helps with future SQL development?
