Platform-agnostic, I sometimes found it challenging to let make the database to what I want in one go. Then it appeared much easier to me using temporary tables and do several processing steps. IBM i is even more easy because you could call external programs as stored procedures. Yet, it is tempting to unload a task to the database engine at once.
Maybe this helps with future SQL development?
