James,
Here's the section of the manual dealing with what you need to set up on
your IBM i to use iACS.
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4?topic=solutions-setting-up-i-platform

From drilling into the first bullet:
<snip>You only need to install IBM i Access Family 5770-XW1 Base and Option
1 if you want to use Data Transfer, or Display and Printer Emulation, or IBM
i Access for Web.</snip>

A common mistake is to assume that IBM i Access for Web is the same as the
http admin interface you get with http://youribmi:2001 aka the webby "IBM
Navigator for i". I think I had to educate Jon Paris on this within the
last year or so. "I would think" more people use "IBM Navigator for i"
than use IBM i Access for Web, but I may be mistaken.

See also: Optional licensed programs
I strongly recommend installing the freebie 5770-TS1 in that same section.
Methinks this is what gives you the capability to download your spool files
as PDF files. I put that on every lpar.

<snip>
On a new 7.4 system:
The following items are preselected if you are installing licensed programs
as part of a new system installation.
5770-SS1 Library QGPL
5770-SS1 Library QUSRSYS
5770-SS1 option 1, Extended Base Support
5770-SS1 option 3, Extended Base Directory Support
5770-SS1 option 30, QSHELL
5770-SS1 option 33, Portable App Solutions Environment 5770-DG1, IBM HTTP
Server for i 5770-JV1, IBM Developer Kit for Java(tm)
5770-JV1 option 17, Java SE 8 64 bit
</snip>
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4?topic=ialp-using-work-licensed-programs-me
nu-install-licensed-programs#contlp
You can probably change the 7.4 in the URL above to 7.3 and maybe 7.2. 7.1
and earlier are less likely to work.

You should have ACS. Most of it doesn't require a license.
I believe only 5250 and data transfer portions require a license.

I'm beginning to see some merit in that idea, at least where Visual
Explain is concerned.

I'm not entirely clear on how one gets ACS, these days. And will it run
on a Mac? And (here's the important part) how much trouble is it to set
up a connection to any arbitrary customer box?
