On an HMC 7063-CR1 managed Power 9 S924 , I recently upgraded the HMC from
V9R1M930 and firmware 01VL930.101 with iFix MH01811 straight to V9R2M950 and
Firmware 01VL950.045 with iFix MH01882.

No problems to report. It took more time to read about it and plan it than to
actually execute the upgrade.

It is an absolute must to install iFix MH01858 before the upgrade per IBM:
"iFix MH01858 ensures that once the HMC is upgraded to the 950 version, all CECs and BPCs connect to the HMC.
Without the fix, all CECs and BPCs will go to 'Failed Authentication' state."
Instruction set is simple from a USB.

Next the upgrade to V9R2M950 cannot be done via a download to a USB device. It must be
downloaded to the HMC. I used PUTTY and an IP IBM provided to pull in the upgrade.
The reboot of the HMC performs the upgrade.
Note: I had the upgrade on a USB device and the PetitMenu IBM says will be displayed
Is bypassed. Called IBM to confirm we didn't have a problem.

Then iFix MH01882 is installed. Instruction set is simple from a USB.

All 3 of the steps above are not disruptive.

Upgrading the FSP firmware from 930.101 to 950.045 Is disruptive.
The 4 IBM I partitions had to be powered down along with the HMC managed system.
Note: The steps IBM had listed on the upgrade instructions had an error as well.
I had to call IBM for clarification and they confirmed 1 step was not needed and was
misleading. Once clarified, the upgrade went smoothly.

Very Respectfully,
Michael Mayer

Thanks Larry, Justin, Rob

I'll take extra care comes the next CUM/GRP PTFs installation time.
(will consult IBM CE)

If your firmware is server managed (ie. no HMC), you have to download
the PTFs individually. They are not in any group.

Personally, I wouldn't jump all the way. I'd go the latest VL940 first.
But I'm just a dev who has to play admin, so YMMV.

Hello experts

It's been 2 years I believe since a CE updated the FW on our P9 i
machine
.
FW level is VL940_041 PTFID MH01844 and Firmware update policy is
*OPSYS Now, will installing (the last) GRP PTFs upgrade the FW to
the next
level
( VL_950 )?

TIA
Gad
