What version of the OS are you running? That document that Richard posted listed states that the 12 character share name issue wasn't fixed until 7.4.
Basically if you have shares named: share1, share2, ilikebigsharenamesandforthisicannotlie, share3
Even if you are trying to only access share2 merely the existence of that big share name can cause issues. Until 7.4 we had to move shares to a different server than one users were allowed to create shares on because they were simply enamored with huge flowery share names.
