Using a fixed size has the advantage that the characters always are the same size, no matter if the display is in 24x80 or 27x132 mode. I found that this is better for my eyes.

Me too. Switching between such drastically different font sizes is
just too much for me.

Drawback is, that frequent switching is somewhat annoying: To accommodate more space for the different "resolutions", the window is being resized dynamically. And, if the window is resized, it's top left corner stays where it is, instead of moving so that the bottom right corner will be within the visible screen boundary.

I don't find the window resizing annoying at all. It is nothing
compared to the pain of font resizing. And with today's large, wide
screens, I find it's pretty easy to make a 132-column window fit and
still have decent legibility.

I guess if you don't mind some wasted space constituting a border
between the window contents and the window frame, then you could in
principle have a mode where the window and font both stay constant. I
haven't heard of anyone doing this though.
