apparently, I did a copy-paste error.

gives a result in around three seconds. :-O This is *a lot* less than before, with some dozen seconds before. (Three seconds might seem much, but remember, we're talking about a 150 here.)

Wrong! I used the wrong test string. It should have been

SELECT ucword FROM ucwrdlstpf WHERE ucword LIKE '______C_U%'

And indeed, with that and the per-char indexes, a full-table scan happens.
