No, it would not be easier that way. There are at least two reasons for this:

1. This is the main one: There are magic constants in the FDF and FDFX
files that do not have to do with the database, and thus cannot be
inferred from SYSCOLUMNS or any other Db2 catalog/service. For
example, the PC file type (CSV, Excel workbook, text file, etc.).

2. Since we *must* inspect the FDFs to copy those magic constants, we
might as well copy everything else from the FDFs, and not bother
incurring the overhead of querying the database.
