Hi Rob,
5770TS1 does indeed convert spoolfiles to PDF (we are using this for other documents), but these PDF documents are not compliant with the PDF/A-1a format, which is required for government archiving.
We already contacted IBM about generating PDF/A-1a compliant documents through a native or IBM supplied product, but there is nothing available at the moment so we must either build our PDF documents from scratch or use third party software.
The software that we are currently trialing does convert to PDF/A-1a so it does what it should do. The only problem is that the embedded fonts are PFB (binary) in stead of PFA (ASCII). I am pretty sure this had nothing to do with the application but with the available fonts on our iseries. We somehow need to get PFA fonts installed on our system, but I have no idea how or if this is even possible.

Try creating pdf files using 5770TS1 instead. If that works, then tell your vendor to shape up or ship out.

I did, but it did not return anything helpful (we are at V7R3).
To answer your other questions: I tried different search terms, including "iseries", "ibm I", "system I" but found nothing about PFA fonts. I did find some pages that referred to the PFB font files in /QIBM/ProdData/OS400/Fonts, but nothing about using PFA fonts in stead of PFB, nothing about availablility of PFA fonts, nothing about any products or options I need to install to be able to use PFA fonts. To be honest, I never even heard about PFA and PFB fonts before today.
We are converting the spoolfiles to PDF using a third party product called CoolSpools. The PDF is created as a valid PDF/A-1a document so I don't think the problem is with this application (but I have asked them for advice anyway).

Did you try searching the PTF cover letters for 5770TS1 for your release at:

Hi,
We are required to create PDF files that are compliant with the PDF/A-1a format. We are using third party software to create those documents and most validators on the web confirm the output is PDF/A compliant.
However, our documents are being rejected because the embedded fonts are PFB (Printer Font Binary) fonts as opposed to PFA (Printer Font ASCII) fonts. The fonts are supplied by our IBM i and not by the third party software. We are only using Helvetica and Helvetica-Bold.
I have tried searching the web for using PFA fonts on an iseries, but have not been able to find anything. Does anyone here know if this is possible and if so, how? Or maybe someone can point me in the direction of documentation related to this subject (I did find information explaining PFA and PFB in general, but nothing related to IBM i).
Regards,
Erwin Donker
