Do you maintain a "golden" source library on your I partition and then

your main repository for source code and not maintain a copy on your I
partition?

The "Zen" of Git is that both models are the same.
The cloud repo is just a merged push of all the local repos.
The local repo is self-standing if complete and the cloud blows away on the
wind.
The advantage of a cloud repo is for backup and for allowing multiple
merges from multiple local repos.
Both models you describe are effectively the same model. Which is the
essence of Git.
