I understand what you are saying. And there is some validity to that. However I disagree. Here I have people that are outstanding developers. Well, I'm getting long in the tooth to be working those crazy around the clock hours to do upgrades. So I have very detailed instructions on how we quiesce our systems, do our H/A switches, do our backups, put on ptf's and release upgrades bring the systems back up, start the H/A syncing process and do the switch back. All in the same weekend. These guys are going to be able to assist. Could they rewrite the instructions? No. Could they do a switch on their own without them? No. But together we get the job done. If they took all the time to learn these steps would they retain them as little as they use them? No.

I've participated in a project in IBM where they had me do a task, videoing me. Just to see how thorough their instructions were.
Another time they wanted to see if their how to set up a new IBM i for dummies was. They asked me to send someone else. The guy the boss picked was perfect for a lack of non programming knowledge. I suppose the non PC way would be to say he put the dummy in "... for dummies" for this application.
