Alan,

Two choices using the BEFORE UPDATE trigger...
- update the value in the column in the after buffer to the value from the
before buffer
- throw an exception that prevents the entire update.

Hi Charles
Yes - they need to see the data - they just cannot update/change it

I replied to your e-mail, saying that it was simple
Now that Ive thought about it - maybe its NOT so simple
How would the trigger program stop the update/change of that field?

The problem with the view ideas others have mentioned...

As I read your OP, you want folks to see the data, but not update it.

Now if you don't want anybody to see it, then yeah locking out the PF and
accessing the data through a view w/o that column is the old school way;
which RCAC replaces.

Thanks for your reply Charles
Your idea of a trigger is intriguing and simple

Was thinking Row and Column Access Control (RCAC) might have an answer..

But doesn't appear to be the case...

Old school method would be a BEFORE UPDATE trigger that disallows the
update if the column has changed.

Hi everyone
We are on V7r3
My question is:-
Is there a way to secure a field in a file so that no one can
update/change it?
I realize that there needs to be a way to actually update/change the
value- but that will need to require a password (or something), so
that it CAN be updated/changed

I tried a google search, but nothing of any relevance was displayed

As always - all responses gratefully accepted
