Short answer no. BRMS only initializes a tape when you add it to BRMS
(optionally) or if you INZMEDBRM (which is available as menu options in
several places)

Initializing a tape on a VTL may clear some storage I've not tried on the
VTL, but then most of them only use the amount of storage actually needed
for the save. I don't administer a Data Domain so I cannot check for you
on that point.

You could get a list of expired tapes from BRMS (unfortunately you'll have
to dig it out of the BRMS files since WRKMEDBRM does not have an outfile
option) and run a script to initialize them, or just do it manually.

WRKMEDBRM TYPE(*EXP) will show you the expired tape. Option 10 will then
"reinitialize" the tapes.

Should not be that many to expire each day so manually might be the way to
go.

Subject: Can I initialize expired tapes using STRMNTBRM?

All -

We back up to an EMC Data Domain (as a VTL) using BRMS. My director doesn't
want to keep unused data on the Data Domain so he wants to initialize the
expired tapes. I am currently manually initializing every expired tape. Is
there a way to initialize the tapes as STRMNTBRM expires them each day?

Thanks,

Steve McKay
