Hi Larry,

When I was a customer I spent 15 years using StandGuard Antivirus (now called Powertech Antivirus). It's a very good product.

Yes, IBM i is virus-resistant. It's NOT malware resistant. You must have a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy because anything shared (IFS, QDLS and even QSYS) can be hosed quite easily with a couple lines of code if proper object-level security isn't in place. And in my experience doing security reviews, it usually isn't.

If you share any part of your system then your best method of risk reduction is the following:

1. ONLY share what you must. And never share the root.
2. Ensure the directories shared are secured with proper object authority 3. Never use a NetServer guest profile 4. Test your backups 5. Regularly review the four above.

Subject: Anti-Virus?

Hello all,
I'm wondering what folks are doing for anit-virus on IBMi or AIX, basically IBM Power. I know we don't get viruses, but we can pass them on through our systems. Wondering if folks are paying for specific solutions for IBM Power, or just running another 3rd party against the IFS......

Thanks, Larry
