Yeah, humans uploading via spreadsheet is always fraught with peril.  Even with CSVs I still get people who insist on bringing the CSV up in a text editor and making a change (because it would take too long to load Excel and export again).  Invariably someone deletes a comma or a quote, and hilarity ensues!!!!  :)

Parsing input data is my least favorite task.  That's why we have data entry screens and macros.

Older version of BPCS with 15A item number.
Someone invariably would modify spreadsheet to change the item number and make it bigger than 15 characters. Now you have to make sure your edit file (using your approach) can handle this.
BTW it normally was about a thousand rows down the spreadsheet.
