Subject: Batch and Interactive User Jobs Hang
Midrange Fans,
Twice recently we've had a period where multiple batch and interactive user
jobs appeared to hang. The first time, all the batch jobs were in a commit
wait state, except a daily save-while-active backup job, which I think was
in an event wait state. Things started moving while I was investigating.
The second time things started moving before I was aware of the hang. In
both cases, the history log shows a flood of CPF5140 Session stopped by a
request from device messages right before things started moving. In the
case of this morning's hang, there were 115 CPF5140 messages in a 24 second
period right as things started moving. They may be unrelated, but it's the
only thing I could find in the log around that times of the hangs that
looked odd.
It might be a save-while-active backup contention issue. But we've never
seen it do anything like this until recently. I did apply the latest BRMS
PTF group to the LPAR in question on the 12th. The LPAR in question is
running IBM i 7.2.
