These things are not mutually exclusive - all 3 approaches have their uses.

Now let's forget about diversion and stay on topic - a validity checker is not used to prompt - I suppose it COULD do almost anything - but prompts are more typical and are the "something similar" you're looking for, as you described.

Now the prompt override only provides the list of values, it doesn't give you something to pick from that will automatically keep going.

Now there is also a CMD exit - that is used to change a value in parameters. You could maybe leverage that, putting up a program to pick values to fill in a parameter. You would want to consider batch vs interactive processing, I would think.
