So I Googled around for something similar for Mac and found a few. I imagine you can set a hotkey that pastes the desired character(s) into ACS.
One nice one I found was Hammerspoon:

Thanks, will keep this in mind. I'm somewhat appalled to the thought that I need an additional program to compensate for a bug in another. :-)

Well, you don't *need* it, but if it's available (and free!) there's
no reason not to take advantage of it. Don't think of Hammerspoon (or
other utility software) as "compensating" or "fixing". It's a tool.
Are computers "compensating" for human inefficiency? In a way, maybe.
But I prefer to think of it as "enhancing" human productivity and
effectiveness.

Like I said, you can find many uses for Hammerspoon. I know I use
AutoHotkey for lots of things, not just keyboard macros. It has made
many things easier and faster for me, most of which have nothing to do
with shortcomings in other software.
