This is indeed a single partition system with a LAN console
(no HMC, for exotic service functions I use ASMI)

That will only work if the system is a single partition managed by a LAN
console.

If there is an HMC and single partition it must be been purposely set to
allow firmware updates to the system via the IBM i interface.

If there are more than one partition on the system with an HMC managed
system, I'm not sure that would work at all.

Not sure what you have, so including the matrix of possibilities.

If there is an HMC in the mix regardless of the number of partitions, best
practice would be to use the HMC to do all firmware updates.
