ok well to avoid this altogether I really need to just chmod on a base
directory and then all the branch directories and files.

would that be safer?

say i'd like to change /home/jvaughn/.ssh/*.* to 755 in one command and
then
change /home/jvaughn/.ssh/*.* back to 600 in a subsequent command..

is there syntax that can accomplish that?

anyone know the syntax for this?

i've tried everything. my latest try is...

chmod -R -f 755 /home/jvaughn/.ssh/

Syntax is correct.

I get - 001-0011 Error found getting current working directory.
Permission
denied.

That is related that you try to run that command from your cwd (current
working directory, which is changed by a cd command) which is either no
longer existing or you have no (longer) access rights (r) for. This
no-rights can also happen anywhere higher in the directory tree.

What's the output of pwd (print working directory)?
