Larry,
This is the method I use when installing new system. I have not played with the network based install but with your outline I am going to test it in my lab (Soon).

Another reason I like my way during installs is I don’t need to be making changes to any of the customers environment. Virtual media is all self contained on HMC/VIOS.

Yes this will work. BUT it requres extra steps to transfer the images to
VIO server. And unless they have fixed it since I last used this method
you must manually load each image as needed.

The use of IBM i to host these avoids both of these issues.

No, I’m referring to Virtual Storage, Virtual Optical.

One of the VIOS’s need to configured with Media Repository and the IBM I LPAR need to have a Virtual Optical Device added to the profile

Have the system in focus
Select Power VM / Virtual Storage
You may need to add column to show which VIOS has Media Repository
Select VIOS, Action, Manage Virtual Storage
Select “Optical Devices”

Easiest way to load media is via FTP/SCP to the VIOS directly. The ISO need to be copied to

/var/vio/VMLibrary

Yes, we are using VIOS.

On the HMC, I can see "Templates and OS Images" under "HMC Management".
This looks promising but when I click "Add Install Resource", there are
only options for AIX and RedHat. Is this what you mean by 'virtual storage
repository'?

Are you using VIOS for virtualization? If yes, then you could move the LIC

We have an HMC-managed Power 8 with several IBM i partitions along with
other AIX and Linux partitions. What is the quickest, easiest way to load
the OS on a newly created partition?

We don't have physical media but we do have the full V7R3 OS in an IFS
directory on one of the existing partitions. These are the images that
were used when we upgraded the other partitions to V7R3 (probably V7R3 TR3
so we would have to get the latest TR and PTFs after we get the new
partition functional).

The partition has not yet been created (if that's a factor in your
recommendation). This is not i-hosting-i - this will be a separate
partition with its own resources.

Thanks,

Steve McKay
