Here's the thing. NEVER Look at backup from the BACKUP end. ALWAYS look at it from the RESTORE End. In other words ask yourself this question:
"In case of emergency how do I put Humpty Dumpty back together again?"
THANK YOU!!! You made my day!! That's *exactly* what I'm telling people for ages!
In any case and with any vendor the key is being able to recover the data quickly, efficiently, and reliably.
That and nothing else counts! I'd even go a step ahead and have Bare Metal Restore as a requirement. What's the point of a backup if I have to do some basic OS install to do a restore? Too error-prone, too time intensive. Nobody needs additional steps to take in case of an emergency, where stress level and thus the chance of doing things wrong is already high.
I was very pleased and positively surprised to learn that even without BRMS, you could IPL from a "Save 21" tape and do a restore from there. Relatively hassle-free. *Very* nice!
