Hello Jim,

thanks for your extensive answer.

The short answer is yes, every partition needs it's own disk adapter and disk units.

Adapter: Also in the hosting LPAR? I know from the linked document that "Disk Units" (aka: Files in IFS) will be given to the LPAR via *NWSD and the OPT01 of the hosting partition will magically appear there, too. :-)

The next steps are outlined in the linked document in my original mail. But I appreciate you taking time for me.

Note: 35*1024=35480, but you have to leave room for virtualization and a
few other things that take about 12%, so I always use # Gig I want * 1024 *
1.12 = nwssize. Others may argue with the formula, but it works.

I'm creating at least 40 GiB to have a bit of space for actual content. But it's good to know that I'm not too far off with my guessing.

Clearly I did not show you all the steps.

Don't worry, they're laid out rather easily in the linked document.

I'm working on an open source version of a program that would create the virtual devices on the HMC, build the partition, do the above, then start the partition.

Cool! I think this is very handy if there's a lot of creation and deletion of partitions happening.
