The trick is, there is no join involved. It's all faked by the code.
IDK if you can use 3 part naming in a procedure/udtf either but it's worth the try.

Three part alias is not the problem. You won't need it. In functional logic, you could simply connect to as much databases as you want and toggle between them with set connection. In this scenario I would prefere a data access SRVPGM with CRUD procedures but this might be a matter of taste.
