Rob:

I believe they are worth the money in some circumstances. The biggest one
is when you are in a hosted environment (colo data center and the like)
where you are charged for power. Many of those agreements call for very
high payments if you use more power than agreed to. The intelligent PDUs
can help you track how much power you actually use.

Then there's the points you made about turning on/off the port. Ever need
to get the FSP to reboot cold due to an error or other issue? I have and
I've had to go to the data center to do it, or have someone else we trust do
it. With intelligent PDU that goes away.

I'm not sure IBM still offers Active Energy Management anymore but about 12
years ago we implemented it while I was VP Technology. We were able to cut
almost $5k/month off the electric bill (big in Arlington TX) by the blade
center and Power5 (at the time) managing electricity usage. Since the PDUs
also had temperature monitors in them we were able to raise the ambient
temperature in the data center to almost 76 degrees, saving almost 10 ton of
air conditioning. The PDU measured the output temperature of the servers to
keep them in specifications.

My $0.02.

Subject: Intelligent PDU's

Are intelligent PDU's worth the money? If so, why?
My first thought was it may be useful to be able to power cycle an outlet
remotely then I got to worrying about what happens if I then discover I also
have to push a button on that out of state device to actually power the
device back up?

IBM announced some new intelligent PDU's
