Unfortunately as said up front, we have old code that occasionally needs
enhancements to get or update new files.

In this case I was able to create i-specs renaming the fields and the
continuation f-spec worked, eventually. I could not find any old guides
showing how to do the rename in the f-spec and was looking to rename the
record format via a i-spec.

I came from a S/36 shop and went straight from RPGII to RPG400.

Create View YourSchema/YourView
(TENCHAR For SIXCHR,
NextField For NXTFLD,
....)
as
Select Cast(TENCHR as Char(70)), NextField ....
From ...

... but are you sure you need a view?
Six character fields are necessary for RPGIII.
A view is always unkeyed and I suspect the RPGIII access is keyed.
So it might be better to create an index with "long" and "short field"
names.
BTW indexes can be used like any keyed logical file with native I/O

I am getting an error that does not tell me what is does not like. I
cannot find a solution on Google.

How do I format the command in a view?
