Select cast(long_field as char(70)) from FROM_FILE

I have to convert 10 character field names in a table to a 6 char field name.

I have tried
Select long_field as char(70) from FROM_FILE.

I am getting an error that does not tell me what is does not like. I cannot find a solution on Google.

How do I format the command in a view?
