At some point your employer should consider switching from ODBC/JDBC to
REST web services that enable more configurable, programmable, flexible IBM
i based access control in contrast to ODBC interfaces. Also consider IBM i
application architecture. For example, we use an interface that I call
"database event handlers" to implement data validation and business rules
that are triggered by database events (insert, update, delete, read), which
provide a better, more robust interface for returning errors to client
applications. It is a lot more secure to keep database-related code "in the
database", so to speak rather than relying on client applications to
implement it.

Also, implement an authority-checking protocol that not only enables
checking user authority to "data", but also checks user authority to
web-service functions such as add, change, delete, read, and any other IBM
i-based process that might be provided to web-service clients.
