well in theory it is possible to run automated release upgrade
without console, if all preparation tasks go well.
But if there is only one small program which stops the automatic
upgrade, system will wait after upgrade in restricted mode...

but nevertheless - no machine without console at all!

No. You do need access to the console to do the upgrade. Also while you can do a full save in batch without a console most users don't thus another need for the console.
