Yes, that works as well.  My personal preference is to avoid monitor blocks for expected conditions; to handle blank fields I waver between the technique I showed and a simple "If = blanks", although being an old assembler programmer I try to go with fewer lines.  :)   I do, though, use monitor for conversions when the data may be dirty and I can safely continue with some default value.

I believe they still complain if the field is ALL blanks.  I've resorted to %int('0' + %trim(myfld)) on occasion (the trim is for leading blanks).  Not pretty , but it works.
