Andrew, you are wrestling, as we all have, with multiple nested levels of
shell quoting! An affliction of the Unix discipline, I assure you!
Here's a tiny example session which may help:
$ ssh localhost "echo \'a\'"
jax@localhost's password:
'a'
And remember, parentheses are shell metachars as well and need escaping,
depending on context.
$ echo (
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
$ echo "("
(
