Gerald,

We recommend a quarterly or bi-yearly application of PTF groups.

Generally, we suggest that you contract with the business that you will have
4 hours of machine time at least once a quarter, monthly is preferred. Then
during that time, you can make any changes you need to. Usually the time is
set for somewhere like 2:00am to 6:00am for system maintenance but if you
can get it to Sunday AM starting at 6:00am that's idea.

As to a full save, really the only time you need to save the OS and LPPs are
when you make major changes (like PTFs or adding an LPP) so quarterly or
bi-yearly is fine.

If uptime is that critical it is time to look at increasing availability.
We do that through the use of HA (High Availability) software. We used to
run Mimix but now run Quick-EDD.
We do our daily backups on the HA machine.
Once a quarter we switch over to the HA machine. At that time we do a full
system save and whatever it takes to get the primary to the latest PTF and
OS level.
Since we run our HA lpar on a different box we also use that time to get the
firmware upgraded and do any planned hardware maintenance.

Our business is now at the point where Sunday morning uptime is critical.
we have been performing a full save (restricted state, savsys, savlib
*NONSYS, dlo, sav), followed by a IPL that will activate any fixes that have
been applied...

we have been "aggressive" with applying fixes, but are comfortable leaving
the system running for many months where it makes sense...

how do others perform patching and saving the OS on a twice a year basis?
