IBM actually encourages you to build triggers over the file SYSLIMTBL.

Interestingly, I ran into a MCH2804 (Tried to go larger than storage limit for object &1) over the weekend on an IFS directory. IBM support said that error is typically caused by a user profile that hits the 50 million object limit. I replied that multiple users are getting the same error referencing the same IFS directory. Support has not yet responded.
