Saturday I had an eye-opening experience that completely changed my perspective regarding permanently applying PTFs. About 9 or 10 hours into our POWER7 to POWER9 migration, our BP casually asks if I had any temp applied PTFs. I answered, "all of them". That was when I learned that a full save only includes permanently applied PTFs. I thought, "OMG, info I could have used yesterday!". Needless to say, I'll be adding permanently applying PTFs to my ongoing PTF strategy.
I presently do a full save then IPL for PTFs monthly. Right now, I'm thinking about doing a perm apply monthly as well (although I may be jumping from one extreme to the other), with the full save/PTFs. By doing a perm apply monthly, my full save tapes will be a consistent 2 months behind on PTFs.
