Approximately 670 British horsemen armed with lances and sabers charged
5,240 Russian cavalry armed with rifles and heavy artillery during the
Crimean war in October 1854. Onlookers described it as reckless madness.
The British met fire from three sides, which eventually encircled them.
They breached the Russian line, only to immediately flee back in retreat.
Most of the Light Brigade were slaughtered. Their valor was overshadowed by
the grief of loved ones who they left behind, and public clamor, demanding
an explanation, which turned out to be a lack of military intelligence
combined with a miscommunication of orders.
