At the risk of sounding dumb, what's wrong with JDBC or ODBC?

I have a fantastic YAJLSERVER endpoint setup to accept and return JSON data
instead.

Depending on how JDBC or ODBC are being used, it's not clear to me
that this can serve as a complete replacement.
