I was thinking just that.
I guess he cannot decide if systems use same or different folders.
It sounds like he needs another l
LPAR with Linux or AIX and GPFS or similar, so they can work online or
offline with files.
It's not easy task even for NAS storage devices

Then put in symbolic links to gain access. Might get a slight bit messy

You can sync bi-directionally or sync deletes Not both .

Not sure about unison and PASE support.

On reliability side: RSync is widely used and comes standard with most NAS
devices

there are some open-source tools (e.g. osync) based on rsync but i
doubt they are as stable as a client would expect an as400 solution.
