Every method I've seen seems to either write back from QSH to a database
file, or teach RPG to parse and IFS CSV.

It's easy enough, no matter what your use case. If you are RPG'ing, it
ain't a big deal to read in one row of a DB file to get your out parms
back
after invoking Python (or Ruby or PHP ...)

First let me say that I haven't used Python. So, does Python have
the ability to issue a message into the joblog using the IBM standard
message file facility? If so, then the way I would handle single value or
single row responses from Python is to put them in a message. Then, RPG
can easily receive the message from the joblog and parse out the message
data. I have even used this method with QSH to retrieve the return code
from the network process I am executing through QSH. I wrote a service
routine for RPG to retrieve messages from the joblog. I put it on the
midrange wiki, too -- search keyword "samples"..

Dave Clark
