Steve,
Yea, I think they made some changes in the recent past. You are right,
although back in the day that's how it used to work.

That’s not exactly correct. Once the order is placed to transfer the
entitlement, the entitlement is removed from the donor system and put in an
un-assigned status. Once the reduced key is ordered, applied and documented
the entitlement is moved to the target system. This also has the affect
that OS keys are no longer available on the donor system once the order is
placed.

You can also get into situations were IBM software support will not longer
provide OS support on the donor system as there are not entitlements. This
is where the ITL Temporary License (Monthly entitlement charge) comes into
play.

The data reduction key will only apply for 5 days after it's issued by
IBM. After that you must get a new key from IBM, following the steps all
again.
Once the key is put in the partitions become effective zombies nearly
instantaneously, so do remember that part.

That's to stop people from ordering the keys, and having that in IBMs
records, then never using them. Unless the follow up emails are sent, IBM
will not remove the entitlement for the software on the donor serial
number. Eventually you will run out of temp keys for the new box and cry
uncle.......

What happens to the donor system on day 6?
Does it run with key error messages?
Will it IPL?

That is the correct document and process. I normally do this for my
customers after they have migrated as the reduced OS key (Qty 1) for the
donor system is only good for 5 days after creation.

Note that you will need to change the LPAR profiles on all IBM I
partitions on the donor system to be 1 CPU max total across all IBM I
LPARs
and activate the LPAR from the changed profile otherwise the key will not
apply. Best process is to delete all but one IBM I partition and just
change that one.

Anyone do the license transfer process from old machine to new machine
recently?
I found this link, not sure if this is current, link/doc includes
several
links which "appear" to be broken.

ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/systems/support/planning/transfer/GI11982418.pdf

I believe below are the steps needed, however, I don't have all the
details.
Also, must you wait till the migration is complete, or can this be in
initiated prior to migration.

1) Install the reduced-quantity software license key(s) on the donor
machine . (PTF required prior to installing the Donor key). The
reduced-quantity software key(s) must be installed in all IBM i
partitions
on the donor machine and verification submitted to the Key Center before
the increased quantity key(s) and entitlement(s) for the receiving
machine
will be made available on the ESS web site.

2)Send the required verification (screen shots) of the donor key(s)
installation to IBM Worldwide Support Center WWSWKEYS@xxxxxxxxxx, also
known as the "Key Center". The Key Center will then make the increased
quantity key(s) available for the receiving machine.

3) Install the increased-quantity key(s) on the receiving machine.

Thank You
