Once upon a time IBM sold accounting packages. And the company buying the package would fill out a massive questionnaire about how they did business. And IBM would feed the answers into a massive program that generated the necessary programs to run your accounting system.

And all of the programs had names like AP0001, AP0002... And the fields had names like F0001 and F0002.

We had source code for at least some of their programs. And the variables in the program had names like V0001 and V0002. And the source had little to no included comments (unless someone at our company had added some).

Worst maintenance nightmare ever! Fortunately, the system ran correctly.

But if your company ever decided to change the way they handled accounting...

That sounds like they were ran through some utility which took RPGII I
specs and generated DDS.
