I'd like to know how many 5 1/4" diskettes they still keep laying around
with data from PC DOS 3.1 machines.
Getting back to IBM i:
Here's another thing that many people do not think of: How easy is it to
interpret the data from 1994? Let's say you had an application which
stored SSN in one file, payrate in another and so on and so forth (I've
worked with such applications). Let's say the application was a purchased
application which required a hardware key. And you've outsourced to ADP
since then and dropped maintenance long ago. And upgraded boxes three
times. Obviously the vendor will want the first born male child of all
employees for a key (if they are even still in business). Do you still
have someone who can tie that back together with the data only and no
programs?
Or you can go to even further extremes. Let's say the software used Field
Procedures or other techniques for encrypting data. Then it could get
really fun.
Our management here is the opposite. Old data is more of a risk than a
benefit. Purge, purge and more purging...

Ask the lawyers to take possession of those tapes. :-)

This list is _AFTER_ we destroyed the non-necessary tapes...
the oldest tape contains data from 1994

That brings up an interesting point-- how old is the data, and what isbe
your company's Data Retention Plan?
We had a large number of older tapes without a matching tape drive, and,
once Legal gave us the go-ahead, we filled a large pallet box with tapes
heading for the shredder.
For any tapes we have to keep that we no longer have tape drives for, we
scrounge for an outside service as needed. We hope that they will never
needed!can
You're in decent shape with *NONSYS saves-- you have the programs that
understand the data!and

Gerald,
I was in the same boat.
We trashed all the 8mm, they were all from 80's and 90's.
Some other points I forgot to mention.
Our goal was to consolidate all media to current media, and have all
volumes filled to the max.
1)performance numbers.
DUPTAP of a full LTO5 to LTO5 volume previously was 10 hours.
DUPTAP of a full LTO5 to LTO7 volume is 4 hours 45 minutes.
DUPTAP of a full LTO7 to LTO7 volume is 18 hours.
2) When setting up the dup job, we used the input volume list to combine
multiple input volumes to one new volume.
3) If the destination volume was not full, we Appended to an existing
volume by specifying *END for the TOSEQNMR.

I only currently have LTO5 hardware...
I suppose I could do this myself.. taking the LTO3 to LTO5 right now...
go from LTO5 to LTO7 after upgrade....list
Is there any way a 8mm drive could attach to a 8202-E4D, or a 9009-41A??

Using a combination of DUPTAP and DUPMEDBRM.
I did a similar process years back in 2012.
Converted all 3590 B and H and LTO3 to LTO5.
I had 8mm that I could not convert, no tape hardware.
Did it again in 2015.
Converted all LTO5 to LTO7.
Do you still have all various tape hardware connected?

I need to convert about 37 tapes of various types and ages to LTO7.
(8mm (13), LTO3(15), LTO5(9))...
15 tapes are full system saves,
11 are *NONSYS,
11 are 2 small library saves,
so to condense the 37 down to a reasonable number could be done if
to only migrate the *NONSYS libraries...
can you recommend some vendors?
about how much should I expect this to cost?
