I've got nothing specific for IBM i but I have fought the email delivery
battle many, many times. Biggest issue is a change of IP address either
to one that had a bad reputation, or new enough address that it had no
reputation at all.
I assume you have the basic's covered: SPF configured, DKIM in use and
a DMARC record...I JUST got bit by a reverse DNS issue. I use JavaMail
and it is pretty verbose about what the cause of the delay or bounce
is. Don't know about how much info you get from the IBM i SMTP
server....sounds like "not much".

We have hundreds of entries in the WRKSMTPEMM screen, showing email oftype

I've been using option 8 to display log entries pertaining to email
entries, but I don't understand many of the log entries. Connections to
email domains appear to be retried over and over, without success. As far
as I can tell, the log doesn't indicate whether a recipient domain is
rejecting the messages, or not.
Sometimes mail is delivered as expected, other times, not! Delivering to
Yahoo appears to be particularly problematic.
Are we missing something fundamental?
