We use 'ibm db2 for i ibmdasql ole db provider' to connect.

I'm trying to see how well SSMS would work for front-ending some queries
for large XLS extracts.

Does anyone have a working example of a Microsoft SSMS linked server
connecting to IBM i that they can share?

The closest driver I can see in the SSMS drop-down would be Microsoft OLE
DB Provider for ODBC Drivers.? Will that work?
