There was some discussion a while back about using .Net core to connect to IBM i data without using something special such as XMLSERVICE.
It looks like there is now an ODBC layer available for .Net Core that seems to work with the IBM i access ODBC driver in Windows.
Simply add this NuGet package to your project and make sure you're running the app on a Windows server.
