We were considering going from 1G to 10G, but, like you said you have to spend some real money to get there.
Switches, firewalls, etc all now need to have 10G ports instead of 1G ports, and that expense becomes large, almost more than the I itself.

I'd say 80% of my customers use that card. The other 20% will move to a
10GB copper (EC2U) card if the normal backbone in the data center is set up
for it. Most of those customers also have network setups to eliminate
nearly every single point of failure, so they spend some real money to get
there.

I've never seen the 5899 pushed hard enough to get it even close to
capacity. Most of the performance graphs flat line at about 1%-2%.
