I have a computer operator here. She has 40+ years here. Pretty much all
in DP, except maybe a year in HS on the shop floor.
Got a call last weekend from her doing an area outside of her usual
comfort zone.
"Use WRKJOB XYZ and cancel all those."
She used WRKJOB. Found the jobs. Could not figure out how to cancel
them. I'm on the phone with her. Take option 41. There's no option 41!
Back at the office on Monday I had to explain that WRK* screens have this
"More..." thing at the bottom right which indicates you can use page up
and page down to see more options. Seriously. Nowadays she's so used to
a mouse that she probably would have figured out the slide bar from the
enhanced GUI version of 5250, if IBM used that. And I can remember darn
near having to peel her 3180 terminal out of her cold dead hands to use a
PC.

No suggestions to use the various flavors of Navigator please as these
were steps to get to restricted state.

I could go on, like she took notes on my instructions that I should
mention the items in question would be highlighted. Ok, so she's not
programmed in decades and has forgotten what the term "reverse image"
meant. So I have to modify my instructions to use both "reverse image"
for the development staff and highlighted for the non development staff.

Modifying who works what shift on downtimes really does ensure that your
instructions stay robust enough for a diverse staff.
