Well, its still unresolved. So I would open another ticket. :) Or find
another solution.

It still stands that it shouldn't matter who or where the mail server is.
To any system its just another IP address.

Thanks Bradley,

The original issue is the spool writer would just end. Sometimes once a
day, sometimes a dozen times a day. The joblog indicated MCH3601 with an
IBM program in the mix somewhere. IBM thought maybe a java mem leak, but
later decided it was something in the communication with the mail server.
The ticket ended - unresolved. It started when we changed from internal
mail server to an external server hosted by MicroFocus. Sometimes it works
and sometimes not.

So, thought maybe employing some other piece of local software/hardware
for Infoprint to talk to, to handle the comm to the remote server. We used
it for years with no issues. SMTP server has never been running.

First, you didn't mention the issues you were having... so we can assume
non-delivery?

Local or remote there shouldn't be a difference. You tell the IBM SMTP
server what mail server to use, and it should. Now, if it requires
authentication and/or SSL/TLS, that could be another issue.

Also, I deal with a lot of customers where the main issue is they don't
have proper DNS servers listed in CFGTCP option 12. That means that now
that you're using a remote server, your IBM i can't resolve to it's IP
address. (No, do NOT use a host table entry!) So make sure you can PING
the remote server from your IBM i command line.

"Distance" or timing shouldn't be an issue. And IBM should be able to run
traces. If not, I offer my MAILTOOL Plus software for free to do
traces/testing. Details here:
https://www.fieldexit.com/forum/display?threadid=140

There are better options out there. ;) Call me biased, but there's a
reason I put so much work into making an alternative over 15 years ago...
I personally just got sick of dealing with the SMTP/MSF system on the IBM
i.

Hi,

I am still having issues with Infoprint Server sending email to a distant
email server. When we had a Microfocus OES software running a local mail
server, we had no problems. IBM thinks it has to do with the timing
involved in sending to a remote mail server. So, I was wondering if it
was
possible for the SMTP server on the ISeries to handle the job of talking
to
the remote mail server. Specifying an ISeries SMTP internal address on
the
PSF configuration so Infoprint Server is no longer involved in responses
from a distant server.

Using the SMTP server as a relay server I guess. Perhaps hoping that it
talks better to a remote server.

It's ok to tell me I'm clueless about the workings of the SMTP server,
and
it does not work that way.

Thanks
