The original issue is the spool writer would just end. Sometimes once a day, sometimes a dozen times a day. The joblog indicated MCH3601 with an IBM program in the mix somewhere. IBM thought maybe a java mem leak, but later decided it was something in the communication with the mail server. The ticket ended - unresolved. It started when we changed from internal mail server to an external server hosted by MicroFocus. Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

So, thought maybe employing some other piece of local software/hardware for Infoprint to talk to, to handle the comm to the remote server. We used it for years with no issues. SMTP server has never been running.

Local or remote there shouldn't be a difference. You tell the IBM SMTP
server what mail server to use, and it should. Now, if it requires
authentication and/or SSL/TLS, that could be another issue.

Also, I deal with a lot of customers where the main issue is they don't
have proper DNS servers listed in CFGTCP option 12. That means that now
that you're using a remote server, your IBM i can't resolve to it's IP
address. (No, do NOT use a host table entry!) So make sure you can PING
the remote server from your IBM i command line.

"Distance" or timing shouldn't be an issue. And IBM should be able to run
traces. If not, I offer my MAILTOOL Plus software for free to do
traces/testing. Details here:

There are better options out there. ;) Call me biased, but there's a
reason I put so much work into making an alternative over 15 years ago...
I personally just got sick of dealing with the SMTP/MSF system on the IBM i.
