SOLVED

It does inherently (as on z/OS, bless its pointed little head) integrate
with DCM.

Had a brainstorm and changed the keystore password in DCM and voilà, GSKit
knew the password.

On z/OS this is all hidden in RACF ... what I was trying to ask was where
it is hidden on IBM i and I guess the answer is "In the IFS under DCM as
there is no integrated all-encompassing security manager of that sort on
IBM i".
